Exposure/Location: hardwood forests, enjoys mucky soils, thrives in proximity to black walnut. Young trees need shade but can take more direct sun as they age. Moist –dry soil, sun – part shade.
Height/Spread: 7-10m (25-35ft) tall,
Bloom: Early spring, maroon/ burgundy /purple red after pollination.
Comments: Edible fruits. Superb large tropical looking leaves. Contains neurotoxin annonacin. Paw paw is the only host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly. Can grow clonal large patches.
